Campus Facilities

Offices, classrooms, and laboratories of the Geology Program are located in the new Science Center and contain all the resources necessary for instruction and basic research.


Analytical instrumentation includes:

  • Student and research petrographic microscopes
  • Atomic absorption spectrometer
  • X-ray diffraction (with Chemistry)
  • Cathode luminoscope
  • Multi-channel exploration seismograph
  • Gamma-ray spectrometer.
  • Earthquake seismology base station
  • Elementary resistivity unit
  • Hydrodynamic flume
  • Triaxial stress-strain apparatus

Other facilities include:

  • Rock preparation room with saws and thin-section equipment
  • Water/sedimentation sampling apparatus
  • Complete structural geology and sedimentology labs
  • Rock/mineral/fossil reference collection
  • Student research room
  • Geographic Information System (GIS) computer lab.

Wheaton College Science Station

The Wheaton College Science Station, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, provides the Geology program with an excellent facility to further enhance instruction and research. The unique offerings of the Science Station facility include:

  • A geology lab which includes a complete rock and mineral reference collection from the Black Hills region
  • A rich geographical setting which provides the opportunity for day trips to sites such as Devils Tower, Homestake Gold Mine, and Mount Rushmore.
  • An excellent study and research area for geology students
  • Field trips to famous geologic sites in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana such as the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone National Park, the Beartooth Mountains, and the Bighorn Mountains


Media Center
