What Is the Evangelism Initiative?

The Evangelism Initiative began at Wheaton College with the recognition that the heritage of making the love of God known to others is a value that must be passed on to each generation. If Christian colleges and universities seek to integrate faith in the exercise of learning, then the ability to segue naturally and winsomely from a discussion of one’s academic discipline to the gospel is a valued educational and missional outcome.

Other Council of Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) schools are beginning to adopt the Evangelism Initiative in ways unique to their campuses. The CCCU deploys approximately 100,000 graduates a year, 1,000,000 in 10 years. If these graduates embrace the privilege and responsibility to make Christ known to those in their spheres of influence, it will have a positive kingdom effect on our nation and our world. Our goal is to see every CCCU school participate in this transformational endeavor.

How Does the Evangelism Initiative Work?

The leadership of the school (the president or one who has the power to make decisions) appoints a core group of individuals to make recommendations on how students will live and breathe evangelism in whatever field they enter after graduation. Each participating college can use programs that are already existing on campus, or if nothing exists which is a natural foundation for an Evangelism Initiative, each college can create a new foundation on that campus.

We want the schools to consider adopting something like the Wheaton Evangelism Group (WEG) to give oversight to an Evangelism Initiative on their campuses.

Where Is the Evangelism Initiative?

Currently, 27 Christian higher education institutions have begun an Evangelism Initiative on their campuses and are at varying stages of implementation. An additional 12 schools are considering beginning an initiative on their campuses. Our goal is to see 10 Christian higher education schools start an initiative on their campuses each year.
