Chronology of ISAE Projects

As part of the effort to encourage and promote research on evangelical Christianity, the ISAE has undertaken numerous projects, both long-term and short-term.

Through the Years with the Institute for the Study of American Evangelicals (ISAE) - A Chronology

1977

April: Trinity College/Deerfield, “Evangelical Perspectives” on American Revolution, etc.—Hatch, Marsden, Noll, Stout, Rockne McCarthy in attendance.

1978

Spring: Second such conference; approximately the same participants; idea for a Bible conference.

1979

Lilly Endowment makes grant for “Bible in America”

 

November: Bible in America conference, Wheaton College.

1980

Oxford University Press publishes George Marsden’s Fundamentalism and American Culture (Opens the door for the ISAE’s “Bible book”).

1982

Lilly grant awarded to create the ISAE and for an “Evangelical Christianity and Modern America” project; Wheaton College agrees to sponsor the Institute to be located inside the Billy Graham Center, Joel Carpenter becomes the first director (1982-1989).

1983

Lilly grant for projects on Jonathan Edwards, Christian Theology, Evang. Higher Education, World Evangelization.

 

Dec. 1983: debut issue of the ISAE newsletter, The Evangelical Studies Bulletin (ESB).

1984

Evangelicalism and Modern America (Marsden, ed.) published (Eerdmans).

 

Fall: Jonathan Edwards Conference, Wheaton College.

1985

March: Christianity Theology in a Post-Christian World conference, Wheaton College.

 

May: The Task of Evangelical Higher Education conference, Wheaton College.

1986

1987

March: Wheaton College decides to close the ISAE at the end of December 2014.

 

June: ISAE awards ten research travel grants to scholars studying the diversity of American evangelicalism (funding from the Luce Endowment).

October: Closing ISAE event, "The Future of Evangelicalism", Wheaton College.
