From the President
Dear Wheaton Parents,
We look forward to seeing many of you in just a few weeks at Family Weekend on November 8-9. This is the last week of A Quad; we resume classes again after Fall Break on Wednesday, October 23.
Last week we welcomed two boards to campus. The Board of Visitors meets twice annually and is comprised of 25 leaders drawn from many vocations—business, the arts, education, ministry, and finance—who help us think about the work of the College. The Board of Trustees, comprised of twenty individuals serving renewable ten-year terms, provides spiritual and fiduciary oversight for the College, and meets three times each year. We are greatly blessed by the gift of time and energy of these men and women.
Last Friday we heard Will Graham, the grandson of Billy Graham ’43. Will surprised us in Chapel with the gift of the preaching Bible Dr. Graham used during one of his last public meetings. Will also announced that the Billy Graham Center Archives at Wheaton College now have over 5,400 sermon manuscripts of Dr. Graham for research.
Thank you for your partnership with us in the ongoing work of Christ-centered higher education at Wheaton College.
In Christ’s service,
Philip G. Ryken

Student Health Service: Meet Our Staff
Did you know that Wheaton's Student Health Services (SHS) is staffed with five board-certified physicians who are alumni of Wheaton College? One of these alumni physicians is Dr. Paul Chiang. After graduating from Wheaton in 1985, Dr. Chiang attended the University of Illinois in Chicago Medical School, becoming board certified in internal medicine. In addition to his work at Student Health Services, Dr. Chiang maintains a full practice with Cadence Health and holds a Master's degree in Bioethics.
For information on all our SHS staff, visit the staff page on our website. SHS is a fully equipped medical office that active students and their spouses are welcome to utilize regardless of the type of health insurance they have. Students can stop in Monday-Friday, 7:30am-5:00pm and Saturday 10:00am-12:00pm to speak with a nurse about their medical questions or to be assessed free of charge.
Currently, the flu shot is available to all active students and their spouses for $20. Students may walk into SHS during our open hours for this vaccine. Students who receive the vaccine will have the $20 charge billed to their account. They will then receive a “walk out statement” in their CPO box to submit to their insurance companies for possible reimbursement. Flu clinics will also be available at various times throughout October in the Beamer Center, Sports and Recreation Complex, and the Graduate School.
In addition to our wide range of routine medical services, SHS also provides promotional activities throughout the year. On November 7th, SHS and Student Government will cosponsor the “DeStress Fest” from 3:00 pm-6:00 pm in Coray Alumni Gymnasium. Students can drop in to take part in any station such as exercise, puzzles, pet therapy, and even a raffle for a free massage that helps them decrease their stress! SHS also provides a monthly wellness magazine, called Student 101. Check out the parent version for yourself!
For more information about our services go to our website, email us at Health.Services@wheaton.edu, or phone us at 630-752-5072.
Residence Life: Student Housing During the Holidays
We want to be sure you're informed with details about student housing during the upcoming holidays. College housing remains open during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. College housing closes for Christmas Break on Friday, December 20 at 12:00 pm (noon) and reopens on Saturday, January 11, at 3:00 pm. The regular meal plan ends with dinner on Thursday, December 19, and resumes with dinner on Saturday, January 11.
Students are not allowed to stay on campus during Christmas Break unless they have prior authorization from the Residence Life Office, which is granted primarily for the following reasons:
- international flights
- campus employment
- class participation
If your student meets one of the above qualifications and wishes to stay on campus, they must do so in a campus apartment or house with the permission of both the Residence Life Office and the residents of the unit where they will be staying as a guest. Requests must be submitted to the Residence Life Office by Monday, December 16 (Reading Day) at this link.
Students who do not submit a Christmas Break housing request by December 16 are responsible for finding their own housing over Christmas Break. No requests will be approved after the December 16 (Reading Day) deadline. Students who stay in campus housing without approval from the Residence Life Office are subject to a fine of $25 per day.
If you have any questions, please contact the Residence Life Office at email@example.com.
It has been a successful fall season for several Wheaton teams. The Thunder women’s soccer team has been ranked number-one in Division III for much of the season. The football, men's soccer and men’s cross country teams have all been ranked nationally this fall and the Thunder volleyball team began the 2013 season with its best start since 2007.
The Thunder women’s tennis team recently won its league-best 19th CCIW Championship at the 2013 CCIW Women’s Tennis Championship.
For up-to-date news and results on Wheaton’s varsity teams, visit the Wheaton Athletics Website (athletics.wheaton.edu.) If your child is a Wheaton College student there’s a very good chance that she or he is engaged in some aspect of the arts. Whether singing in a choral ensemble, taking a class in visual art, acting in a theater production, writing for student publications, or dancing – all such curricular and extra-curricular engagements reflect the value Wheaton places in developing students' creative gifts for the glory of Christ’s kingdom. As the Bible begins, its fifth word seems to highlight an aspect of God's character that is deeply planted in who we are as His children. Arts offerings such as Arena Theater's current production of Romeo and Juliet or the Symphonic Band's concert for more than 10,000 area children take Wheaton College into the neighborhood and throughout the world. Our mission of serving Christ and His Kingdom is made all the more powerful and compelling through the powerful voice of the arts.
- Send your student a Care Package full of great munchies. Include their CPO number and we will send it to the Campus Post Office for their pick-up.
- Load your student’s ID card with ThunderBucks Plus--additional funds that can be used at Sam’s, the C-Store, and the Stupe.
- Bookstore gift cards, purchased for your student, can be used for snacks, a warm sweatshirt, fleece hat, shampoo, laundry soap, and textbooks. Amounts of $25 up to $500 are available.
- Hoodies and tees can be sent directly to your student's CPO box for them to wear to the football game, a campus concert, or around town over the weekend.
If your student doesn’t have their B-quad books yet, have them hop on to wheatonbooks.com. Books are listed by course, and many are available to rent. We will process their order and they can pick it up at the Bookstore. Students can use our site to comparison shop as well.
Did you know that we are owned and operated by the College, our staff is employed by the College, and that we employ 15-20 students each year? Also, as a campus department all revenue from the Bookstore returns to the College fund. When you make your purchases at the Bookstore you know what you are supporting – in today’s retail atmosphere that is not always clear. We thank you for your continued support and we look forward to serving you and your students.
How can you pray for Wheaton this month?
Pray for our students as they travel, play, and rest during this weekend's fall break. Pray for their safety and rejuvenation, and for the service opportunities that many students will engage.
Pray for preparations underway for Family Weekend on November 8-9. Pray for safe travel and encouraging connections for all parents, students, and family members.
- Pray for our Athletics teams and for students in the Performing Arts. During this busy season, pray that these students will remain healthy, that they will find fun and encouragement with peers, and that the exercise of their gifts will bring great joy to them and to the Lord.
Wishing you a wonderful Fall Break!
The Wheaton College Parent Relations team
