The Advent Market creates an opportunity for students to support various ministries and non-profit organizations while also providing a meaningful gift alternative to the chaos of super-malls during the holidays. Various groups set up booths and sell products made by local and global artisans, including jewelry, bags, ornaments, stationary, coffee, pottery, t-shirts, and more. All of the profits go back to the respective organization. In addition to providing unique and meaningful gifts and raising money for good causes, the event also gives each organization the opportunity to share its mission and work with the Wheaton Community.
Organized by the students of the Social Justice Coalition, Wheaton's first Advent Market was held in December, 2010. Fifteen organizations participated, and the turn-out was excellent. In the span of one afternoon and evening nearly $10,000 in total was raised for the participating groups. The Student Activities Office is confident that this will become a staple annual event on campus.
