Unidad Cristiana at Wheaton College

Unidad Cristiana

Unidad CabinetWho We Are

Unidad Cristiana exists as a community that empowers all students of Latino backgrounds to explore, develop, and express their ethnic identity in Christ. We also aim to create awareness and appreciation for the diversity of Latino cultures in the larger Wheaton Community.

Our Goals

Our hope is that, through events and fellowship, we will foster community, relationships with one another, and relationship with God. We use our common love of Latino culture to reach out to students on campus who want to gain a better understanding of what it means to honor God through diversity and heritage.

Who Can Join

While Unidad exists primarily as a support to Latino students at Wheaton, we also provide numerous opportunities for the rest of campus to engage, learn about, and celebrate Latino cultures. Our primary desire is to see God glorified and honored by our lives, and through Unidad Our goal is that through fellowship within the Wheaton College Community we can encourage both Latino and other culturally diverse students and also promote awareness of the diversity within Latino cultures.

A Student's Insight

Unidad Cristiana at Wheaton CollegeCarol Torres '17

There are several challenges because of being a racial minority on campus. You miss your food, home, language, atmosphere, etc. It can be hard to adapt. As a Latina, I definitely miss my mom’s black beans, spicy foods, and I also miss speaking Spanish at home. Thankfully I found a place that reminded me of home—Unidad Cristiana. It is a place where I have been able to build community with other Latinos and find comfort in my experience. I was also able to gain support to branch out to the rest of the Wheaton community.

A supportive Latino community was our vision for the year. As a cabinet member, I fully embraced the vision and ran with it. We made sure to create events that catered to our Latino community. We hosted Sunday dinners every week where we ate authentic Hispanic food. We also created events that welcomed the whole community. We partnered with Sabor Latino and hosted a campus-wide dance with Latin music and food. We also had game nights, bowling nights, and cookouts for anyone to come and taste a bit of our culture.

Being a Latino isn't a reason to hide, or be ashamed of who you are. It is something to be proud of, something to embrace, and something to share.
