Mayor Daley Visits Wheaton College

March 3, 2011

Richard M. Daley, Mayor of Chicago, does not often venture into the suburbs, but on March 3, 2011, he came to Wheaton to give a keynote lecture to a packed house in the Barrows Auditorium. (Mayor Daley retired on May 16, 2011 after 22 years in office.)

The mayor used the open lecture format at Wheaton College to reflect on his years of service and to address ongoing concerns and highlights for the city of Chicago. Daley spoke for 44 minutes on a variety of topics and then answered a number of student questions. He began the lecture by emphasizing the role that the suburbs play in making the greater Chicago area thrive. “It’s not just Chicago itself,” he said “It’s the region.” The mayor went on to discuss education, economics, and the virtues of public service.

Does Capitalism Have a Soul?

An informal debate with Arthur Brooks and Jim Wallis.

October 28, 2010

Capitalism is a hot-button issue these days. Recent financial upheaval has sparked lively public debate about the role, nature—and even validity—of the economic system.

For Christians, the role of faith inevitably enters the conversation. The J. Dennis Hastert Center seeks to address this dimension by inviting you to a formal debate entitled “Does Capitalism Have a Soul?” Opposing perspectives on the topic will be offered by Arthur C. Brooks, president of the American Enterprise Institute, and Jim Wallis, President of Sojourners Magazine.

“The debate promises to be a lively and informative event featuring two excellent communicators with contrasting views about capitalism and democracy. Students, faculty, and the community will find their time well spent in attending the debate.” says Seth Norton.

The event was held on October 28, 2010 at 7:00 PM in Edman Chapel on the Wheaton College Campus. The debate was moderated by Hastert Fellow, Michael Gerson, Washington Post columnist and former speech writer for President George W. Bush.
