Independent Study

An Independent Study (2 or 4 credit hours) offers students the opportunity for an individualized program of reading, research, writing and oral examination on a particular topic.

Recent independent studies have included “Women in Medieval Europe,” “ Lincoln ’s Presidential Cabinet,” “Mao Zedong,” and “A Historiographical Study of Ibn Khaldun.
The independent study option exists primarily for junior and senior majors and allows for extensive study into a specific area of interest. Requests of non-majors for independent studies will be considered at the discretion of the department chair.

Permission for any independent study depends upon the availability of appropriate supervising faculty. The independent study option is not to be used as a substitute for or duplicate of courses or seminars already covered in the curriculum. For further information, consult the Independent Study Application form and speak with your academic adviser in the History Department.
