Comprehensive Exams / Master’s Thesis

The comprehensive exam is a 0-credit hour, pass/fail course taken during your final semester in the program. It is designed to test your knowledge of the core courses for the M.A. programs. The exams are scheduled shortly after the mid-semester break over the course of two weekends. Most students report that they enjoy the chance to review and integrate all that they have learned during their time in the program. Plus, students usually form close bonds as they study together. In lieu of taking the comprehensive exams, some students choose to write a Master’s thesis. This is a good option for those who are interested in researching a topic in depth, but most students choose to take the comprehensive exam. Talk to your adviser in your 1st semester if you are interested in writing a thesis.
