"A Surprising Correspondence: Dorothy L. Sayers and Karl Barth on Artistic Creativity" a lecture by David McNutt

This lecture considers the little-known written correspondence between Dorothy L. Sayers and Swiss theologian Karl Barth, and the relationship between Sayers's views of creativity and a theology of creativity informed by Barth's work. It was given at the Wade Center on April 25, 2013 and is available for download via the link below.

David McNutt is the Visiting Assistant Professor of Theology in the Biblical & Theological Studies Department at Wheaton College, where he teaches courses in systematic and historical theology. He recently completed his Ph.D. dissertation, "Karl Barth's Doctrine of Creation and a Reformed Vision of Artistic Creativity," at the University of Cambridge. He is also an ordained Teaching Elder (the office previously known as Minister of Word and Sacrament) in the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Dr. Alister McGrath is a Senior Research Fellow at Harris Manchester College at Oxford University and President of the Oxford Center for Christian Apologetics. A former atheist, McGrath is now a priest ordained in the Church of England, popular speaker, and the author of more than 50 books. This media content is in celebration of his newly published biography on C.S. Lewis: C.S. Lewis: A Life (Tyndale 2013).

Two recent lectures by Dr. Alister McGrath are now available via Wheaton's WETN website:

1) "C.S. Lewis: Eccentric Genius, Reluctant Prophet" was given on March 20, 2013, and co-sponsored by Tyndale House Publishers.

2) "C.S. Lewis and the Enrichment of Our Faith" was given in Edman Chapel for the Wheaton College community on March 22, 2013.

3) McGrath Interview with Greg Wheatley on WETN, Wheaton College Radio. Audio only. Recorded March 19, 2013.

“Bacchus in Narnia? C.S. Lewis and the Classics of Greece and Rome” a lecture by Jonathan Kirkpatrick

This lecture was given at the Wade Center on February 28, 2013, and explores how Greece and Rome dominated C.S. Lewis’s education and strongly influenced his thought and writings. Kirkpatrick was born in England in the town of Guildford. He studied Classics at Oxford and recently completed a doctorate there. For the last three years he has been a Scholar in Residence at C.S. Lewis’s former home, the Kilns, and currently serves as Director of Studies in Classics and in the History of Art for the CCCU's study abroad program in Oxford.

"The Music of The Lord of the Rings Films" a lecture by Doug Adams

In 2001, composer Howard Shore invited Doug Adams to observe and document his work on Peter Jackson’s motion picture trilogy The Lord of the Rings. Adams attended recording sessions, examined the original scores, and was given complete access to the composer’s archives. After nearly a decade of writing and research, Adams published The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films, an unprecedented exploration of Shore’s Academy Award-winning soundtrack, with extensive musical examples, original manuscript excerpts, and glimpses into the creative process by the composer himself.
