During the course of his life, Jonathan Edwards assumed many roles: pastor, evangelist, writer, and missionary. In a typical pose, we see him here preaching from the pulpit of the Northhampton, Massachusetts, church, where he was pastor during the revivals of 1735 and 1740. Tempering his thought with compassion and evangelistic zeal,Edwards was able, through his written works, to interpret God's great plan of salvation in a manner unparalleled in American theology. The flowers in the banner mirror Edwards' meditation that, "The soul of a true Christian . . . appeared like such a little white flower as we see in the Spring of the year: low and humble on the ground, opening its blossom to receive the pleasant beams of the sun's glory; rejoicing as it were, in a calm rapture."
