Ronald Potter

The Center for Applied Christian Ethics and Christianity Today's Big Tent Initiative welcome Reverend Ronald C. Potter to campus Wednesday, September 29, 7pm in Armerding Recital Hall for his lecture "Looking Back, Looking Forward: Reflections of an Older New Black Evangelical.”

In our pursuit to capture the full scope of American evangelical history, CACE has partnered with Christianity Today's Big Tent Initiative to bring to Wheaton College a series of pioneering Christian leaders of color.

Reverend Ronald C. Potter is a theologian and a historian of the modern Black evangelical movement. He has taught and lectured at numerous institutions including Harvard Divinity School, Union Theological Seminary, Covenant Theological Seminary, and the Center for Urban Theological Studies. He serves as a board member of the National Black Evangelical Association and speaker with the John and Vera Mae Perkins Foundation.

Rev. Ronald Clifton Potter is a lecturer, preacher and writer residing in Jackson, Mississippi. An ordained minister, he attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey and received a Master of Divinity degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He also pursued doctoral studies in Theological Ethics at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. Rev. Potter is an active member of the American Academy of Religion, the Obsidian Society and a board member of the National Black Evangelical Association.

He has taught and lectured at numerous institutions including Harvard University, Harvard Divinity School in Boston, MA; Union Theological Seminary; Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA; Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, MO; Essex County College in Newark, NJ; Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA; Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN; the Center for Urban Theological Studies in Philadelphia, PA; Clark College in Atlanta, GA; Jackson State University, Hinds Community College in Jackson, MS, as well as other colleges and universities. He is on the Speaker’s Team at the John & Vera Mae Perkins Foundation and lectures on Christian Thought and Contemporary Culture. He is married to Joanie Perkins Potter, an attorney (and daughter of noted author and Christian leader, Dr. John M. Perkins), and the father of their two daughters, 26-year-old Varah and 19-year-old Karah.
