Black + Evangelical Film Premiere
On Friday, February 21, Wheaton’s Center for Applied Christian Ethics will premier a new feature-length documentary entitled Black + Evangelical. In conjunction with Christianity Today, CACE has produced this documentary to tell the story of some of the men and women who have navigated the intersection of these two, at times, seemingly competing identities. Black + Evangelical chronicles the history of black evangelicalism in the United States, tells the story of struggles in American society, and charts a path forward for black evangelical culture. The documentary also features many interviews with black evangelical leaders, including Ruth Bentley, Carl Ellis Jr., Ron Potter, Walter McCray, Nicole Martin, William Pannell, and others.
Dr. Vincent Bacote calls the documentary “an opportunity for our broader church family to encounter the legacy of those they may not know well or at all.” He adds that it “also affords the opportunity for minorities in evangelical spaces to encounter others who have come before them and have walked a similar path. It seeks to show that the word “evangelical” can be a tradition that expresses holistic, good-news faith.”
Prior to the documentary screening at 7:00pm, there will be a conference in the afternoon, with one panel discussing “Encounters with Evangelical Institutions” at 1:00pm, and a second at 3:00pm discussing “Lessons from the Historical Review Task Force.” All events will be held in Barrows Auditorium.
