Reach Out With English 30-hour General ESL Teaching Certificate
Course Description: “Reach Out with English” (ROWE) is a 30-hour general TESOL course which provides a broad foundation for effective ESL teaching. It may be taken non-credit or for graduate credit. Participants receive a 30-hour certificate. At this time, ROWE is only offered online via Zoom. Note: The Basics workshop series (Basics 101, 102, & 103) can be combined for the 30-hour ROWE certificate.
Dates: Reach Out with English (ROWE)--Basics 102 & Basics 103 will be offered Spring 2024
Note: This course has been typically offered in two formats: 1-week intensive in the summer and a combination of three Saturday workshops (Basics 101, 102, and 103) for 24 in-class hours plus 6 hours of out-of-class application homework or participation in extra sessions.
Due to low enrollment for the summer 1-week option, we will no longer be offering this format.

Essentials of Teaching ESL Grammar Course
Course Description: Essentials of Teaching ESL Grammar is a non-credit course equipping teachers with basics skills for teaching English Grammar. Participants receive a 30-hr certificate.
Dates: Next Offering: Weeks of January 27 - March 31, 2025. This will be a ten-week course, with one 3-hour session per week.

Essentials of Teaching English Pronunciation Course
Course Description: Essentials of Teaching English Pronunciation is a non-credit course equipping teachers with basics skills for teaching English Pronunciation. Participants receive a 30-hour certificate.
Dates: Next Projected Offering: Winter 2026 (January-March). This will be a ten-week course, with one 3-hour session per week.

ESL Workshop Descriptions
One-Day Workshops for ESL Teachers
Our One-Day Workshops include Basics 101, 102, and 103 which may be combined toward the 30-hour ROWE ESL teaching certificate, as well as two elective workshops. Typically, Basics 101 and an elective workshop are offered each fall, while Basics 102 & 103 are offered each spring.
Fall 2024 Workshops:
Basics of ESL Teaching 101—Saturday, October 26, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. CT
This workshop provides a strong foundation for effective ESL / EFL teaching. It focuses on both foundational principles of teaching and learning a language as well as practical aspects such as needs analysis, error correction, and lesson planning. It can be combined with two other workshops (Basics 102 & Basics 103--offered in the spring) for a 30-hour Reach Out with English (ROWE) certificate.
Essentials of Teaching Vocabulary 401--Saturday, November 9, 8;30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. CT
This elective, stand-alone workshop focuses on the basic principles of vocabulary teaching and learning as well as effective practices for presenting and incorporating vocabulary into your lessons. In addition, we will explore how to best assist learners with idioms and slang. Finally, we will explore various ESL dictionaries and determine ways to choose and use them effectively.

Cost of one-day workshops: $95 (early registration); $115 (late registration)
Special Rates: $45 (for those taking the workshop again; also applies to past ROWE participants taking any Basics courses); $55 (current Wheaton College undergraduate and graduate students)
Additional discounts (only apply to those paying $95 or $115 rate): $10 discount per workshop if registering for both workshops in a semester; $10 discount per person for groups of 3 or more from one organization/church
