C. Hassell Bullock, Ph.D.Professor of Hebrew Bible Emeritus

Originally from Alabama, Dr. C. Hassell Bullock studied at Samford University and Columbia Theological Seminary. He earned his Ph.D. at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1970. He began teaching at Wheaton College in 1973 and soon became a widely recognized scholar of Hebrew Bible. In 1988, he was appointed to the Franklin S. Dyrness Chair of Biblical Studies, a position he held until his retirement in 2009. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and served as a professor both at Wheaton and in other venues around the world, including Israel, Jamaica, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, and Nigeria. At Wheaton he was a sought-after and respected teacher among his students.
Hassell’s specialty is in the Hebrew Bible’s Wisdom Literature and particularly the Psalms. This specialty led to a variety of publications and, in particular, his two-volume work in the Teach the Text series which interprets the Psalms for the church. His first volume on Psalms 1-72 appeared in 2015 (Baker Academic) and the second volume on Psalms 73-150 appeared in 2017.
He continues to be active in the Evangelical Theological Society (where he served as president, 2007-2008) and the Society of Biblical Literature. He lives in Wheaton with his wife, Rhonda, and they have a son and a daughter, both Wheaton alumni, and four grandchildren.
He continues to serve the local church as a teacher and preacher and to teach part-time at Wheaton College.
