Educational Requirements
Master's degree or higher in counseling from a CACREP or CORE accredited program, or the content equivalent, with a minimum of 60 graduate semester hours (or 90 graduate quarter hours) from a regionally accredited academic institution. Beginning January 1, 2024, a master's degree in counseling is defined as a single conferred/awarded master’s degree in counseling from a CACREP accredited program, consisting of a minimum of sixty (60) graduate semester hours, or ninety (90) graduate quarter hours at a regionally accredited college or university. The master’s degree must contain and encompass the academic areas specified below in paragraph 2(b). No less than these hourly requirements and academic areas in a single program will be accepted.

An applicant must have a minimum of 3 graduate level credits in ethics.
To pursue a LPC in Alaska, applicants must acquire 3,000 or more hours of supervised experience after graduation, of which a minimum of 1,000 hours will be devoted to direct counseling with communities, couples, or individuals and at least 100 hours of in-person guidance of a supervisor approved by the Alaska Board of Professional Counselors.

2 years/3,200 hours of full-time post-master's supervised work experience in psychotherapy, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. 100 hours of clinical supervision and 1,600 hours of direct client contact are required.
As of October 31, 2015: If a program is not accredited by CACREP or CORE, it must require 700 clinical supervision hours and a minimum of 24 semester hours in 8 content areas.

Students graduating from the Wheaton College CMHC CACREP accredited program meets the requirements in this state as of July 22nd, 2024.
- Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
- Licensed Professional Counselor Trainee
An applicant who has completed the degree requirements but not the supervised experience; valid for 48 months
Educational Requirements
Master’s degree or higher in professional counseling from a CACREP or CORE accredited institution that includes a minimum of 60 semester hours (or 90 quarter hours) of academic credit in counseling related courses.
3 semester hours of Counseling Theories and 3 semester hours of a supervised counseling practicum are required.
Courses in 16 core content areas required.

Master's degree or higher in counseling, with a minimum of 60 semester hours (or 90 quarter hours) from a CACREP or CORE accredited program, or a regionally accredited college or university which meets the CACREP criteria for coursework, instructor qualification and supervision.
