For 30 years, the Chicago Tribune has honored artists who make significant contributions to Chicago’s vibrant arts community with the prestigious “Chicagoan of the Year.” This year, Wheaton College Conservatory of Music’s Dr. Shawn Okpebholo received the title for Classical Music, joining the ranks of renowned artists such as Daniel Barenboim, former music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1991-2006); Blake-Anthony Johnson, president and CEO of the Chicago Sinfonietta; Alan Stone, founder of the Chicago Opera Theater; and Jessie Montgomery, composer-in-residence for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
“Professor Shawn Okpebholo embodies the spirit of excellence and faith that define Wheaton College,” said Wheaton College President Philip Ryken. “His commitment to his Christian faith not only guides his remarkable contributions to classical music composition but also serves as a profound source of inspiration for our students and community. This honor is a testament to his exceptional artistry, God-honoring leadership, and love for his community.”
Okpebholo, who has taught at the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music since 2010, currently serves as the Jonathan Blanchard Distinguished Professor of Composition. He has mentored and inspired hundreds of students—many of whom have gone on to distinguished careers of their own. His work has had a far-reaching impact, resonating with audiences throughout Chicagoland and across the globe.
“Fifteen years ago, I moved to Chicagoland, and from the very start, this city embraced me and my art,” Okpebholo said. “Receiving this news nearly brought me to tears—affirming a journey only God could have orchestrated and renewing my excitement to do what I love most: telling stories through my music.”
Okpebholo’s career is distinguished not only by this recognition but also by an array of accolades and achievements. In 2022 he earned a GRAMMY® nomination for his acclaimed solo album Lord, How Come Me Here? and has held prestigious residencies with organizations such as the Chicago Opera Theater and the Saykaly Garbulinska Lexington Philharmonic.
